Q&A
Have you consulted actively with Brixton people?
Brixton Green has been set up by Brixton people. There have been many thousands of hours of discussions and consultations with Brixton people and businesses regarding the proposal.
This work is continuing and we are encouraging all the local groups and organisations to be involved. We want Brixton people to share their knowledge and help develop a proposal for this site that will benefit Brixton for generations.
We are holding workshops and open events. If you are an individual or group who want to be involved please contact us:
- Telephone: 020 7183 5838
- Via our website – www.brixtongreen.org/contact/
- At one of our events
How do you know local people want this?
Over the past four years we have received an enormously positive response to the proposal from other local people. Brixton Green now has over 1,000 local people as shareholders, and more joining every week.
What does this mean for people living on Somerleyton Road?
With Brixton Green, the people living on Somerleyton Road can help shape what will be built opposite their homes. Currently the opposite side of the road is industrial units, many of which are run down. The proposal so far is for these to be replaced with good quality homes with front gardens and family units on the ground floor.
Will buildings be demolished – if so, which ones?
The current plans will mean the light industrial buildings along the site will need to be demolished.
Will the trees be taken down?
No, the current proposal is for the trees to be retained.
When do you expect this development to happen?
If we are able to acquire the site this year, we could enter detailed planning during 2013 with construction starting in 2014. Everyone must be aware that there are a number of factors that can delay a large scale development.
Why are you doing this?
Many of the people who started Brixton Green have seen the direct effect of the failed regeneration plans on people they know. These affects include lack of jobs, lack of prospects for young people, reduced community cohesion.
The Somerleyton Road site is of strategic importance to the communities in Brixton. If developed well it could help knit together and strengthen our town.
Do the organisers stand to gain financially?
Brixton Green is structured so that neither directors, trustees or shareholders can take a profit from the organisation. This has the benefit of ensuring that all those involved keep community benefit as their focus.
There are also checks and measures to ensure this is adhered to. All expenditure has to be approved by the trustees. The director is appointed by and accountable to the trustees. The trustees are accountable to the shareholders. Shareholders have the opportunity to see the accounts and elect trustees at the AGM.
The Brixton Green team have all been working on a voluntary basis.
If we have concerns, how can we raise them?
If anyone has any concerns then please contact us. This proposal continues to be strengthened by Brixton people raising their concerns and finding the solutions together.

Can I withdraw my share?
If you no longer wish to be a member of Brixton Green you can withdraw your share. However the £1 is non-refundable.
What will the money be used for?
The money raised will contribute towards the costs involved in bringing forward this community led development. By giving us £1 in this way you gain a vote that is equal to the other members’ and recognised in law.
Who will pay for the development?
The development will be funded in a similar way to other large scale developments. Except this time the community will act as the client and the aim will be community benefit, not private profit.
We have an excellent team of advisors including Savills and the award winning architects Feilden, Clegg and Bradley and an experienced board. With their advice and extensive conversations with potential development partners we are ensuring a financially viable proposal is being brought forward.
Who decides what is built?
All members of the community can have their say in what we build. No one knows what an area needs more than the people who live and work there.
